I recently updated my MacBook Pro with 'BigSur'.

Tonight whilst checking a program that plays sound, I got an error. It looked like the sound system wasn't being properly initialised.
So I checked with the code below which is in the manual. Running that code I got the error: "Sound system is not available"

Can anyone confirm this?

My System: System Version: macOS 11.0.1 (20B29) -- Kernel Version: Darwin 20.1.0

Code:
; ------------------------------------------------------------
;
;   PureBasic - Sound example file
;
;    (c) Fantaisie Software
;
; ------------------------------------------------------------
;

If InitSound() = 0
  MessageRequester("Error", "Sound system is not available",  0)
  End
EndIf

SoundFileName$ = OpenFileRequester("Choose a .wav file", "", "Wave files|*.wav",0)
If SoundFileName$
  If LoadSound(0, SoundFileName$)
    PlaySound(0, #PB_Sound_Loop)
    MessageRequester("Sound", "Playing the sound (loop)..."+#LF$+"Click to quit..", 0)
  Else
    MessageRequester("Error", "Can't load the sound.", 0)
  EndIf
EndIf
End

I think the console explains the reason ...
Quote:
This application, or a library it uses, is using the deprecated Component Manager for hosting Audio Components. This is not supported when rebuilding against the 10.16 or later SDK. Also, this makes the host incompatible with version 3 audio units. Please transition to the API's in AudioComponent.h.

@wilbert,
Thank you for your reply.
I am not sure I fully understand your reply. Should I ask this Thread to be moved to Mac/OSX Bugs?

The PureBasic Sound library contains code that isn't supported anymore with the latest macOS version.
It's a similar problem as the one with playing movies
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=73941

The problem with this is that previously compiled applications which use those libraries also don't work anymore on a newer macOS version.
It might be good if it would be moved to Bugs - Mac OSX.

@wilbert,
Thank you for the simpler explanation; I understand now. :)

Could this thread be moved to Bugs Mac/OSX, please.

@Andre,
Thank you :D

I decided to upgrade my MacBook Pro to the new M1 version.
I downloaded Xcode version 12.3 which appeared to be recommended. Installing this automatically installed Rosetta 2.
I next downloaded PureBasic 5.73 64 bit which needed a little intervention, during installing, since it did not appear to have the necessary signature.

The IDE opened normally and all the relatively simple code I tried ran perfectly; some ran about 10% faster.

I did, however, see a number of 'bugs':

1. Whenever I exited the IDE it simply crashed. Rather annoying.
2. The Music, alluded to earlier, was still a problem.
3. When I tried to amend some lines of code I ran into a problem which effectively makes the IDE unusable: Any keyboard character that also has a command key mod always assumes that the command key is pressed. So 'o' or 'O' is the same as Command_o.

The first two bugs have been confirmed.
The third has not, yet. Can anyone confirm this or perhaps advise me if I am doing something wrong.

Re 1:
This also annoys me a bit, but I haven't got around to looking for the bug yet. I'll get to work on it slowly.
Re 2:
There is an alternative for macOS somewhere, but I don't know where.
To 3:
What does @dibor say with his Mac Mini M1?

@mk-soft,
Thank you for your comments.

I haven't heard from @dibor.

I might consider an alternative IDE in the future. If you are aware of a suitable alternative, I'd be pleased to know.
