OpenGL has in the past been a bit of a moving target, the consequence of which is that there are a lot of tutorials etc on the Internet that were fine when they were published but are now out of date.
Khronos, the official guardians of the OpenGL Specifications, recognise this issue and they have published a Best Practice Guide that explains what is best practice and why:
