I wonder how applicable this will be for computers? Given its complexity, it probably has to be implemented in hardware to be anywhere efficient enough for computers.

I don't see much explained but I guess the theory is there. Still needs proven. Anyways, here's how I do that problem in my head.
round 159 to 160
300 x 160 = 48000
10 x 160 = 1600
4 x 160 = 640
48000 + 1600 + 640 = 50240
50240 - 314 = 49926 (minus the rounded number)
Breaking it down to simple math makes it much easier when you don't have a calculator.
