Free Web hosting?

Post by doctorized »

6 years ago, I made a post here about free web hosting. One guy with the nickname "Foz" offered me a free account on https://www.hostinger.co.uk/. The account was working fine and was more than I wanted. Two months ago, I noticed that my account is dead. I tried to contact with him here in the forum but no answer arrived. So, I have to ask once again for a free space. I do not need any online editor etc. Just a space to upload files with Filezilla. It is for a post graduation purpose so I do not want to spend money for it.

Why not use Dropbox for that? Or di you want to create a homepage?
The english grammar is freeware, you can use it freely - But it's not Open Source, i.e. you can not change it or publish it in altered way.

Yes, I want to create a web page. Aw you may see, I have made some post in this forum about html menu and css but I experience many problems, I have done a huge google search and I haven't found something that it works. All the codes posted and marked as solutions are not working properly for me, at least locally that I use them right now with the latest version of Firefox and Chrome, so I need to find a small free web hosting service to do my tests there.

For the first in the list I read that is unreliable and its users experienced attacks. The last one was tried today and broke my nerves. I will try the rest of them...

I don't know if it is a good idea to use completely free services. You can rent a whole Linux server for 5€ a month and you can do nearly all the things you want with this: https://www.strato.de/server/linux-vserver/
And if you only want to host a website including domains and a mail service, you can get it for 4€ a month: https://www.strato.de/hosting/

And there are tons of such services out there where you have to pay very little money to get what you need and with a warranty.

Foz was last online here on Jan 5 (3 days ago) so maybe he didn't see your PM yet.

As you discovered, free hosting (and free anything, really) is usually not a good idea; because you're at the mercy of whoever decides they don't want to keep giving away their services for nothing. It's not worth the risk and instability hassle.

Having said that, when I was going free in the past I used 000webhost.com for my site. It has a lot of pros and cons, the main cons being only 1 GB of space, and they also take your site offline for one hour per day. Use it at your own risk.

As I said, it is for post graduation purpose. I will not need more thar 50MB of space. The university department is not giving space to us, the greek school network once upon a time was giving at least 500MB space. A few days ago they updated email space from 1GB to 2 but their web services like web hosting, sql support, moodle etc are dead for years. I already pay for my lessons. I don't want and it is not needed to pay for a space for 5-6 months. That's why I want something simple, honest and free.

Hi doctorized,

For the past year and a half I have been using the free web services provided by https://x10hosting.com/. These services include website hosting, various email services, My SQL Database, a variety of frameworks, and numerous other security features, software platforms, and applications. In addition, 1 GB of free disk space is provided.

See the link in the footer of this post for an example.

Cheers.

I tried to register a few gays ago and it said that "We are not currently accepting new users from Greece." This is said today too. So I cannot use them. I have fould a solution to my problem without hosting, at least for now.

@JHPJHP: Just wanted to thank you for the x10hosting recommendation. I had to switch from 000webhost because they pull down your website for an hour per day; plus they were advertising about the Russia/Ukraine war at the bottom of my site. Now I've got a better free host until I can afford to pay for real hosting again. Thanks!

If you don't go with the VPS route then it's worth noting that you will need to buy an SSL certificate to keep google chrome from scaring your users with warnings that say don't go to your website because without https it's a dangerous and scary website and totally unsafe and will, like, probably kick your dog.

If you get a VPS you can use a free SSL service. The modern web is basically going to nickle and dime you to death as an indie developer.

Actually, x10hosting.com lets you use a free SSL cert via Let's Encrypt (the industry-standard provider of free SSL certs). I created the cert in x10hosting's Control Panel (https://i.imgur.com/hWeWV9R.png), and now my site uses the "https" protocol and shows the padlock in the Address Bar with no warnings from any web browser:

Image

If the user clicks the padlock, they get this info -> https://i.imgur.com/SxL6tfp.png

Also, my domain registrar lets me redirect to x10hosting.com in "stealth" mode so that my URL in the web browser's Address Bar shows my domain name and not "x10hosting.com", which is fantastic because nobody will immediately know it's a free host (unless they start digging by viewing the source, etc). And I solved the problem of linked pages revealing the "x10hosting.com" URL by using a single web page with tabs, like PureBasic's PanelGadget(). So the user clicks the tabs and see the "different" pages of my web site without actually loading different pages. All they ever see is my domain name in the Address Bar when navigating. Nice!

So I'm glad this all worked out for me. It's just a stop-gap temporary method until I can afford to pay for real hosting again... whenever that is. Money is so tight in these times! Even a single head of lettuce here in Australia is about $12 now. Crazy!

Hi BarryG,

I know this is a little late, but I've not visited this forum section for quite a while.

You are most welcome, I'm glad you found the information useful.

I moved to their paid services after a couple years of benefiting from their free services.
For what I'm using it for there really isn't much of a difference, but I do like not having to check-in.
